I have always admired and enjoyed visiting well maintained kitchen gardens, and it is a delight to see the carefully husbanded vegetables and fruit growing in the walled garden on the Attyflin Estate. It seems to me restful and reassuring that the fundamentals of life are carried on when our lives seem too busy to stop and stare.
The Attyflin Estate has a 500-year history of food production and the O’Connell Family recently launched an artisan range of apple juice, preserves and jams bringing a “back to basics” approach for the delectation of lovers of Irish home grown produce.
Using their abundant environmentally friendly kitchen garden crop they press their apples and preserve their soft fruits to create delicious bottles and jars of goodness. They are promising additional recipes for the future to which I look forward to tasting.
We are delighted at Greedy Goose Hampers to include the Attyflin Estate Apple Juice and Chutneys with a selection of award winning Irish Cheeses, which make a splendid combination reminiscent to the traditional cheese board.
My taste testing Notes:
Attyflin Apple Juice. A clear pressed apple juice with a non-sweetened rounded flavour. No additional sugars added so I found a refreshing level of natural tartness balanced with the sweetness.
Attyflin Pear Chutney. One of the more delicate chutneys where the vinegar does not overcome the soft pear flavour. Just a hint of ginger makes the cheese zing.
Attyflin Plum Sauce. Quite a revelation. Not in the least spicy as some recipes, and makes a great accompaniment to roasted or grilled pork. This Plum Sauce adds an interesting smooth sweetness to cheese, and the texture is similar to that of a quince preserve.
